The popularity of CBD (a.k.a. cannabidiol) has been on the rise for a couple of years now. As research continues to evolve, the cannabis compound has been shown to reduce stress, support sleep issues, and enhance overall well-being by working with our endocannabinoid system, a key player in our body’s ability to maintain homeostasis, or biological harmony.
Whether you’re new to the world of CBD or have been using it for years, you’re in luck, because the amount of stellar, rigorously tested products continues to grow. Here are the CBD products doctors love and recommend.
Jacqueline Montoya, M.D., (@drjacky_fit), member of The Vitamin Shoppe Wellness Council, loves these CBD capsules. “After a recent knee injury during heavy lifting, I needed a great joint support supplement that would help me recover and get back to lifting,” she says.
“FitJoint is a powerhouse formula of three amazing ingredients that work synergistically to support healthy joint function,” Montoya explains.
First: UC-II, a form of collagen that has shown promise in promoting joint function and mobility.
Second: curcumin, the primary bioactive substance in turmeric, which has powerful antioxidant properties. (FitJoint also contains piperine, a component of black pepper, to boost curcumin’s bioavailability.)
Finally, 10 milligrams of CBD from full-spectrum hemp extract tie this popular product together.
(Editor’s Note: Though Montoya no longer has any affiliation with CBDFit, she helped develop the formula for this product.)
Jen Palmer, N.D., the Director of Education for pioneer CBD brand Charlotte’s Web, who recently created a one-year herbal Continuing Medical Education (CME) program for physicians, fell into the realm of CBD rather fortuitously. Palmer actually started using hemp extract to support her dog’s health—and dove in after seeing her canine’s success with it.
“One of my favorite Charlotte’s Web products that I use and recommend to all my friends and family right now is the Calm Gummies,” she says. “They contain hemp-derived CBD, l-theanine (an amino acid that supports relaxation), and lemon balm (a calming herbal extract). I take them throughout the day as needed, and love that they help with calm, without making me feel tired.”
In case you’re skeptical, Palmer recommends checking out this 2017 Frontiers in Pharmacology study, which found that people who took CBD prior to a public speaking event felt more at ease than those who took a placebo. (The study suggests CBD helped support normal heart rate and blood pressure, which can be affected by pre-speech nerves.)
“At night, I switch to [these sleep gummies], which offer 10 milligrams of hemp-derived CBD plus three milligrams melatonin,” Palmer says. “Melatonin helps support regular sleep cycles and a restful night of sleep, and I personally find it works even better when combined with CBD.”
Bonus: These gummies have a natural raspberry flavor that makes them extra enjoyable.
Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C, co-founder of Ancient Nutrition and member of The Vitamin Shoppe Wellness Council, is a huge fan of this cinnamon-flavored oil. “This CBD hemp oil comes with a measured dropper, making it easy to adjust your serving for your needs. It also has a cinnamon flavor that provides a subtle sweetness,” he says. “At 10 milligrams of CBD per serving, it’s a great starter bottle for anyone trying hemp for the first time or for those taking small amounts daily to maintain overall balance.”
He also likes that this CBD comes from organic hemp, since the cannabis plant is a bio-accumulator, meaning it absorbs both good and bad substances from the air, water, and soil around it.
This multi-collagen formula is created with ingredients like CBD, turmeric root, cinnamon bark, organic apple cider vinegar, and black pepper fruit, making it a potent immune-booster and body-balancer. “This is the ultimate combination of ingredients for supporting healthy joints and gut, while promoting a healthy inflammation response in the body,” says Axe.
“I have found [this pain cream] to be exceptional, as it really helps to soothe ailments,” says Dr. Giuseppe Aragona, M.D., Medical Advisor at Prescription Doctor. “I have personally found this product to be remarkable,” he says. Bonus: The time-release formula helps keep pain at bay for longer.
